Getaways: Catatoga Lodge

Often times, when I cover a fishing resort where anglers can truly escape work, school, or just the dull roar of everyday life, I try to highlight Getaways that appeal to a variety of personalities, as well as a variety of wallet sizes. However, I also realize that there are fishermen out there who want all the serenity of a pastoral, rustic retreat, but don’t want to sacrifice the comforts and luxuries of home. This brings me to this month’s Getaway, an elite fly fishing resort where anglers with the financial means can enjoy the sport they love, Catatoga Lodge.

Nestled in a private community in West North Carolina, the Catatoga Lodge is located only minutes from Lake Toxaway, and one of the nation’s best trout rivers, Indian Creek, flows directly through the property. The resort utilizes the services of the esteemed Davidson River Outfitters to offer its guests rewarding fishing packages that include accommodations for two nights, breakfast daily, a full day of guided fishing along some of the area’s amazing rivers, including Indian Creek and Davidson River, equipment, lunch, and unlimited fly fishing during your stay! You can also arrange float trips or private water excursions, if you so desire.

Guests of the resort have five options, regarding accommodations, all of which come with several amenities, including a DVD player, flat screen television, and some even have a deck, in-room safe, or Jacuzzi tub. However, since the resort only possesses five rooms, it is advised that you make reservations several weeks in advance. Your stay also includes use of the lodge’s pantry, full kitchen, living room with fire place, and large deck, though each room offers a beautiful view of Lake Toxaway.

Besides fishing, Catatoga Lodge also offers canoeing, access to the clubhouse, use of the lodge’s Olympic sized heated pool, access to both the fitness center and tennis courts, and majestic nature trails.

You’ll notice that my coverage of Catatoga doesn’t include activities for children or local attractions. That is because guests of the lodge are there to fish and relax. If you’re looking for a place to bring the family or be swept up in an exciting night life, this is not the resort for you. With Catatoga, you get what you pay for, and what you pay for is sterling accommodations and amenities, legendary guide services on renowned rivers, and the privacy that a small, lucrative resort offers. Fly fishing can be expensive, and the Catatoga Lodge reflects this realization, but the sport and its associated resorts and services, reflect its pristine reputation and quality among outdoorsmen. If you’re interested in such an experience, then North Carolina’s Catatoga Lodge is perfect for you.
