Gear Up: Keen Gypsum Mid Boot

If you haven’t already noticed, I’ve established a bit of a pattern this month, regarding article themes. Yes, this month I’ve focused on boots, but with good reason; I strongly feel that every outdoors enthusiast should begin their shopping list from the ground up. That being said, I wanted to highlight an exceptional boot to help you Gear Up this month. Keep reading to learn more about the Gypsum, a quality mid-cut boot from Keen.

Anyone who’s worn a pair of Keen before knows just how durable and comfortable they are, and the Gypsum is no exception. Keen’s boots, in general, have been commended for their comfort. In fact, many customers (myself included) assert that they’re more comfortable than any other shoe they’ve ever worn.

Externally, the boot is protected by a layer of waterproof nubuck leather uppers that offer increased durability and flexibility once they’re efficiently broken in. The Gypsum also utilizes Keen’s signature rubber toe guards, which add more protection from rocks, roots, and other potentially harmful objects on the trail. Lastly, the rubber outsoles are comprised of 4mm multidirectional lugs for more traction and grip even on the slickest terrain.

Internally, the Gypsums possess a Keen Dry membrane, a waterproof, breathable layer that wicks perspiration and dries it before it can saturate the interior of the boot. The Gypsum’s EVA footbeds are shaped to provide maximum comfort, support, and cushioning, but can also be removed and replaced by orthopedic products if needed. Also made of EVA are the boot’s midsoles, which helps provide more shock-absorption and padding, which only increases comfort.  Rounding out the Gypsum’s features are thermoplastic urethane plates that provide increased stability on uneven terrain and heel stabilizers that add more support and protect against ankle twists.

Like any quality boot, the Gypsum isn’t cheap, and costs $140. However, if you plan on hiking often, or have worn out your current pair of boots, it’s well worth it to spend the money. After all, a $140 pair of boots will last a lot longer and provide much more comfort and durability than a $30 pair from a department store.

As a Keen customer myself, I can attest to the sheer comfort and durability of the company’s boots. My Targhee II mids have helped me on backpacking trips to Canada, Honduras, and all over Michigan, and the Gypsum will do the same for anyone wearing them. If you find yourself in need of a new pair of boots, you can do a lot worse than Keen’s Gyspums. Don’t take my word for it, though; do yourself a favor and head over to your nearest outdoor retailer and tie on a pair.
