One helpful trait for an outdoors enthusiast to possess is resourcefulness. If you can think outside the box and come up with ways to repurpose everyday household items when you’re camping or hiking for the sake of convenience or survival, then you’re ahead of the curve. Not only will this possibly save space and time, but it can also save lives in some instances. Today, we’ll take a look at a few different ways you can reuse one common household item: aluminum foil.
Improvised Cookware and Dishes
Where cooking is concerned, the use of foil may seem like an obvious no-brainer, but its uses actually go beyond preparing foil dinners For instance, if needed you can craft your own frying pan from foil by placing a forked stick over two layers of foil and then wrapping the foil around the sticks, leaving some slack. Then, flip the stick over and press down the center of the foil to create a pan for frying. Also, you can make serving dishes from foil by forming a couple sheets of foil into the shape of a plate or bowl.
Scrubber
Speaking of dishes, you can clean them by balling up some foil and using the abrasive edges to buff away unwanted grease and grime, similar to steel wool.
Insulation
Aluminum foil is excellent at keeping hot things hot and cold things cold. To accomplish either, simply wrap it around a beverage container or around hot and cold foods to maintain the desired temperature.
Misc.
A few other uses for foil include the following: Make pouring things easier by crafting a funnel out of foil. Also, you can keep matches dry on camping trips by wrapping them in foil. It also helps to keep bugs out of your drinks by topping your drink with a foil lid and then poking a straw through it.
The tips outlined above are just a handful of ways that myself and others I’ve known have used aluminum foil to make camping a bit easier. There are likely dozens of other great uses for foil on the trail or at your campsite, though, so remember to think outside the box. Who knows?
