Royal Caribbean Under Fire For Endangering Passengers

Cruise ships are normally extremely stable vessels. No matter what the conditions outside it seems like business as usual. The roulette wheel spins, drinks are poured and the party conditions. But not so on a recent trip on board Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas.

In what was supposed to be a 7-day trip from New York to the Bahamas was cut short on Sunday when the ship was hit with a severe storm. Four passengers were injured, though none serious, but many were shaken according to USA Today.

Many of the 4,500 passengers posted harrowing images to social media showing deck chairs flown through the air, broken glass and other hazards. One passenger speculated that the ship’s stabilizers were not working, which was causing it to list so much from side to side.

In a statement to the media, Royal Caribbean Corporation said the weather was unexpected, but reporters at the Weather Channel took issue with that assumption. Marine forecasts since Wednesday apparently detailed the chances of severe wind and waves.
