How to Install a Trolling Motor

A trolling motor has evolved to become an essential tool for fishing, allowing anglers to silently maneuver their boats, while pursuing fish.

In order to get the most out of your trolling motor, it needs to be mounted and maintained properly. Here are some key tips that will help you get the most out of your trolling motor.

Mounting

It may seem obvious, but when mounting your trolling motor to the front of your boat, the mounting plate must run horizontal to the water or the motor will not operate properly. If your boat has a slanted bow you will need to place something beneath the front of the mounting plate to raise it, so it is horizontal to the water.  One of the best solutions is a V-shaped piece of aluminum, which can easily be bent to the correct height.

Another thing to consider, when mounting the trolling motor to the bow of the boat, is which side it should go on. If you are right handed, you may think the motor should go on the right side, but some  casters find it easier to operate the motor with their opposite foot while casting. Experiment to see which setup works best for you.

Battery

Choosing the right battery is important to ensure the consistent operation of your trolling motor.  When choosing your battery, you have two basic choices. There is the deep-cycle marine battery and the absorbed glass mat battery.

Both types of batteries work well for trolling motors, because they are designed for frequent charging and recharging. AGM batteries tend to last longer, but they are considerably more expensive. Deep cycle marine batteries are more economical, especially for those on a budget.

Whatever battery you chose, the important thing is to make sure your battery is charged, each time you head out on the water. If you notice your battery’s operating time is decreasing, there is a good chance you need a new battery.

Circuit breaker

When installing your trolling motor, it is recommended that you also have a circuit breaker. This will protect your motor from significant damage and save you the cost of replacing it. The circuit breaker becomes invaluable when your motor become hung up on thick weeds or other obstruction. It cuts the power to the motor, preventing it from burning out.

Maintenance

In order to keep your trolling motor in good operating condition, it is important to regularly perform  few maintenance tasks.

  • You should regularly clean your trolling motor with warm, soapy water, removing any sand, dirt or dried weeds that may be on it. Also check to make sure all screws and bolts are tightened properly.
  • Before you head out on the water, pull the prop and inspect the shaft for any obstructions, such as fishing line that has become wrapped around it.  Also inspect the prop for any damage.
  • Periodically check the battery connections for corrosion.
